How To Expand Your Email List

What are your thoughts on email marketing? Lately, I feel overwhelmed by it all. My personal email account is flooded with junk – daily! And, let me tell ya. . . I have gotten pretty fast at “checking” it all. I actually choose not to open most of the emails. Haha, Yep! After a quick glance at the subject lines, I do a quick “select-all” on most of those messages and hit delete. My inbox is then left with a handful of messages that I feel might actually be worth my time opening.

Seems silly, huh? Yeah, it is but I am sure you can relate to this inbox clutter. We receive offers, newsletters, updates, social network notifications, and the occasional email from a family member or friend. It is never ending!

How in the heck did my inbox even get to this point? This had me thinking.

Most of my messages are from companies that I have subscribed to. I actually gave them permission to send me this “stuff.” What I once thought I needed to receive, now has lost my interest. I feel like these exclusive offers, discounts, notifications, reminders, etc. are not of great value to me anymore.

I am also annoyed at the quantity of emails that I receive from these companies. Why do I have to be notified so much throughout a single week? It is too much! No wonder why the number one reason that people unsubscribe is due to businesses over-emailing.

To keep my inbox tamed, I recently spent some time unsubscribing from the companies that sent me too much irrelevant content — this should save me time and frustration down the road. I've also started using other methods of communication such as Twitter to stay tuned in to offers, discounts and announcements.

As a marketer, I watched social media play an increasingly great role in capturing the attention of Internet users. This is awesome! Marketers are enjoying the boost in online visibility social media has brought. However, as these other methods of communication continue to develop, we cannot forget about email marketing.

Email is still the most favored way to communicate online. I bet you can agree that not everyone wants to dive into the social media world, but they probably have an email account!

My point?

Email marketing has been around for a while, and it is definitely here to stay! In fact, investment in email marketing will grow to reach nearly $2 billion in 2014 (source: Forrester Research).  This is crazy!

So. . . What's your email marketing strategy for 2014?

With spending on email marketing on the rise, it is so very important for your business to be successful at carrying out your campaigns.
